No. 234 - Mom Died III
I wish I had a week off from life.
My alarm clock would be Peggy-O (4/30/77)
I start every morning with a quadruple Seven and Seven
I’d ease into an ante meridiem buzz
I have a cigar. And donuts.
I’d watch Dukes of Hazzard all day
in my Cosmos Club bathrobe
I’d take my first nap around eleven
and listen to Labi Siffre when I woke
But not before pouring another drink … perhaps a hurricane
and a Winston
I’d never take off my slippers
Or comb my hair … not even my mustache
Hopefully the Braves are playing
First pitch at a quarter past twelve
while a pizza is delivered
But if they’re not … I’ll watch Masterpiece Theater
And memories of mother will bring tears to my eyes
I’ll fall in a drunken dream
Where my brother is alive
So is grandpa
And a grandmother I never met
My resolve wilts
I’ll go to my poets
They’ll comfort me … they always do
And I’ll wake up … begrudgingly
To a world where my mother is dead
